What is Shogi (Japanese Chess)?【Shogi Session for Beginners #1】

1. 将棋とは –About Shogi

「将棋」とは江戸時代から続く日本の伝統文化です。
２人で遊ぶボードゲームで、交互に駒を動かして
先に相手の王様をつかまえた方が勝ちとなります。
将棋の一番の魅力は、世代をこえて楽しめるところです。
藤井聡太七段（※）の活躍で、
いま日本では将棋が大ブームとなっています。

“Shogi (Japanese Chess)” is a Japanese traditional culture since Edo-era.
It is a board game for 2 players. Players move their piece in turns.
You win the game when you capture the opponent’s King.
The most attractive point of Shogi is all generation can enjoy together.
Now Shogi is very popular in Japan by the influence of Sota Fujii (※).

藤井聡太七段は史上最年少の14歳と２ヶ月でプロになりました。
デビューしてまだ１年半ですが、たくさんの新記録を作り、今後がもっとも期待されるプロ棋士です。

Sota Fujii became the youngest pro-shogi player (14 years and 2 months).
He made a lot of new records in a short term and he is the most expected pro-shogi player.

2. 将棋に必要なものは？ –What do you need to play Shogi?

将棋に必要なものは２つです。　We need 2 items to play Shogi.

①将棋盤 (Shogi Board)

スポーツにたとえると「競技場」。
８１（９×９）のマスが書かれたものを使います。

The Shogi Board is like a “Stadium” in sports.
We use one with 81 squares (9 by 9).

②駒 (Pieces)

スポーツにたとえると「選手」。
それぞれ２０枚ずつ、合計４０枚の駒を使います。

Pieces are like “Players” in sports.
We use totally 40 pieces (20 pieces for each other).
